I am often asked what is the best way of meeting people in Bangkok and my answer is always twitter. I joined twitter as soon as I moved to Bangkok, but rarely used to tweet – everyone from Bangkok seemed to know each other, and I was initially too shy to join in and start chatting.
I wish I had started tweeting sooner, as it’s how I now know all of my closest friends in Bangkok and how all of the best social events seem to get organised, one of which is the Bangkok Curry Club!
There is a very long story about how the Bangkok Curry Club was formed, which I won’t go into here, but it led to Simon organising these evenings – the evening we had with Mrs Balbir was the second one.
Mrs Balbir is something of a legend around Bangkok – initially her restaurant was down the road, but it has been on Sukhumvit Soi 11/1 for the last 38 years. She is still there every evening and trains every new chef herself.
At the beginning of the night we were lucky enough to have a cooking class courtesy of Mrs Balbir herself – I was more excited about this than the thought of the actual curry. We watched as she took us through step by step how to make the perfect onion bhaji:
We then sat down to an amazing feast of samosas, shish kebab, chicken tikka masala, lamb rogan josh, aloo gobi, dahl, palak paneer, chicken tikka, rice and naans – all of course washed down with wine and beer!
Mrs Balbir also joined us for a while, answering any questions we had. She told us how she loved nothing more than being in the kitchen and putting together new recipes such as multi grain naans and chicken tikka with Philadelphia cream cheese and spices. She’s such an interesting and charming lady, and it was really kind of her to take such time with us.
It was a fun evening and nice to do something a little bit different – my mouth is already watering at the thought of the next event! Thanks Simon for taking the trouble to put the events together!
If you would like to come, then please make sure you are following chief organiser Bangkok Simon on twitter. If you don’t have twitter but are interested in attending (I am not sure when it will be yet) please email me at bangkokgirlblog@yahoo.com and I will keep you posted with details.
