Cabbages and Condoms

I had heard a lot about Cabbages and Condoms, and so I anticipated it not being an average restaurant, but I had certainly not imagined being greated by Captain Condom (made out of…..?!) and a Father Christmas made out of….yup….condoms!

The restaurant situated on Sukhumvit Soi 12 has a great feel. Quite bluntly, condoms are everywhere, whether it be the lightshades made out of them, the lifesize statutes or the ones given at the end of the meal instead of the usual mint, but in no way does the resturant feel tacky or gimicky.

Although it is far from small, the restuarant has a cosy feel with multi coloured lights twinkling on the trees.

The basis behind the resturant according to their website, was in part to promote a great understanding of family plannning and to also aid support of the many activities developed by the Population and Community Development Association (PDA). PDA was one of the first organisations to raise awareness about the risk of HIV and AIDS in Thailand, following the first case being diagnosed in 1984.

It is a great place to bring friends or newcomers to Bangkok: their menu is massive and it has a wide range of dishes from those following a healthy diet (there is a menu for healthy eyes), to authentic Thai food, sea food and vegetarian dishes. Main dishes cost around 200B on average, with sea food being slighty more (try the sea bass with chilli sauce – amazing!). A large Singha beer will set you back 130B. Unfortunately wine is more expensive at 900B for a large carafe (not my idea of large!) and 1590B for a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc.

Their slogan really caps things off……”And remember, our food is guaranteed not to cause pregnancy”!

This was my first time here despite living so close to it. To be honest, I had been a little put off and imagined it to be touristy, cheesy and overpriced; but that is not the case. The food is fantastic, both in quality and price, and I thought in line with other resturants in the area. The concept is very cool, but interwoven so well that it is not in your face – I can’t wait to come back!
